Education and Leadership
I have worked tirelessly in my career as a teacher, campus administrator, and district level system leader in serving others; in meeting the needs of diverse school communities; and in building effective systems that promote a culture of high expectations, that maximize opportunities, promote growth and improvement, and successful student outcomes.
I believe that education is the most vital element in all progress and success. It is critical to the advancement of society and the development of productive citizens. In order to effectively amplify society, the educational system must serve as the foundation and vessel for a strong and viable community. The cardinal purpose of an exemplary educational system is to inspire, develop, and provide an engaging and nurturing learning environment that meets the needs of ALL learners. Teaching and learning must be at the heart of the system, where teachers have strong content knowledge and an abundance of care for their students, where students are taught with pedagogical best practices, and students possess a sense of belonging and are challenged to become critical thinkers, problem solvers, creators of new ideas, engineers of new solutions, productive citizens and future leaders.
Effective leaders must build the capacity of the organization by developing, guiding, and empowering those they lead to reach their fullest potential and impact as leaders. In order to build and sustain a strong and effective educational system, teachers, leaders, parents, members of the community, and the Board of Trustees must work collectively to create interconnectedness and levels of support so that the goals and successful student outcomes of the system are seamless. Additionally, leaders must establish a clear vision based on the educational community’s needs. As a school leader, it is essential to hear, engage, and appropriately respond to stakeholders in order to build strong relationships, and develop the priorities of the district as determined by the needs of students. Excellent school systems are defined by a student-centered culture, a vision of high expectation, exceptional teaching and learning, fiscally responsible and transparent processes, student focused and data informed decision making, effective communication, and strong stakeholder partnerships.
System leaders must have a deep understanding of the organization and the values of the community, the ability to create and carry a vision of the future, the knowledge to get to the final destination through a strategic action plan, and must be supportive and not allow subjective opinions to warp decision-making. Decisions should be based on the core values of the organization with the students’ best interest at heart. Serving children is both a privilege and a sacred endeavor that should never be taken lightly. That is why ethics and morals should always be ever-present in the thought processes and in the actions of a leader.
